Alsatian Dogs - The German Shepherd heroes of World War I

Dogs have been an integral part of the defense system of all countries for centuries. Their intelligence and a keen sense of smell have saved thousands of lives over the years. One of the front runners among these spectacular dog breeds is the German Shepherd breed.

Elegant muscular hairy body and a pointed snout are distinctive to this breed. However, their daunting stare and equally ferocious growl are often the reason for scaring away perpetrators easily.

Historically German Shepherds played a very distinctive role during World War I. However given the political scenario where Germans were at war against the USA and UK, the name German Shepherd did not feel comfortable for many American and British patriots.

The breeders were also scared that the popularity of the breed would decline drastically given its name. During this time, coincidentally the British were fighting the Germans along the French-German border of Alsace-Lorraine. That’s how the pseudo name of Alsatian came into existence.

For years Alsatian was the name was officially recorded instead of German Shepherd until it was finally reverted back in 1977 by the American Kennel Association. Given the long history and controversy behind the two names of this breed, many often have protested that Alsatian is an entirely different breed than the German Shepherd.

The mistake is more due to the confusion one has with another breed of the same family. Belgium Shepherd a distinctive close cousin of the German Shepherd. Though both have similar features, their personality and build are distinctive and can be differentiated easily.

The Belgium Shepherds are smaller in size and weight, and they also are known to be extremely adamant and hyperactive. They do not make a very good family dog nor they are used in the defense industry.

Alsatians, on the other hand, are extremely protective and loving towards its family and are known for their highly capable and intelligent attitude. One of the most preferred breeds, German Shepherds needs regular training and grooming.

If you truly want to invest yourself in adopting a dog German Shepherds are one of the best to choose for, however what is more important is to learn about dog breeds well before opting to adopt one.
